Sagging; Is it fad or fashion?
“Pants on the ground, pants on the ground looking like a fool with your pants on the ground.” These are lyrics to a song by Atlanta’s own guy General Larry Platt.
In my search in locating concrete info on this ever so popular craze, I was surprised to see that the first thing that came up was a Wikipedia definition. I was shocked that it actually had so much information and detail for any onlookers who want to find out where the heck this look began. Below is a brief segment of that definition.
“Sagging is a manner of wearing trousers or jeans which sag so that the top of the trousers or jeans are significantly below the waist, sometimes revealing much of the underwear. And it also gives the origin, according to Greg Mathis, sagging was adopted from the United States prison system where belts are sometimes prohibited to prevent prisoners from using them as weapons or committing suicide by hanging themselves. The style was later popularized by hip-hop artists in the 1990s. It later became a symbol of freedom and cultural awareness among some youths or a symbol of their rejection of the values of mainstream society. Read more here from Wikipedia about Sagging.
According to Wikipedia “Sagging” is a fashion trend. Normally when we talk trends we are referring to something that will go in and out of style. I truly DO NOT believe that this look will EVER end. Those who consider it fashion are definitely not forward thinkers. The Generation Y (ers), and select rappers are continuing to hand down this ridiculous craze to the little guys. I have seen young toddlers and adolescents wearing this look along side their dads, uncles, cousins etc. They probably think they are looking cool also. I also believe that this look is not race or gender specific. I have seen boys of all races wear sagging pants. Also, there are girls that will sag and wear thongs. Ladies lets leave something to the imagination. The craziest thing about this look is the way guys have to walk with their legs opened wide in order to actually keep the pants from falling down. Ughhh!!! Ever seen them run? They actually hold their pants so that they will stay up until they start walking again. Hilarious! In my honest opinion this is NOT fashion. I truly believe that it is a fad. According to Wikipedia a fad is any form of behavior that develops among a large population and is collectively followed enthusiastically for a period of time, generally as a result of the behavior being perceived as popular by one’s peers or being deemed “cool” by social media.
This funny yet true timeline gives me concrete clues that this look will be around for an extremely long period of time.
As a mom of all boys I will NOT allow my kids to walk around like that. My older boys (ages 17 and 20) like to wear their pants slightly off their hips which to me is still a form of “Sagging”. I somewhat compromise as long they are wearing a belt, the underwear is not showing and the pants are not hanging down to their knees. I do want them to have their own little swag and not look like they have high waisted pants on either…LOL!
So now that you know a little bit more about Sagging, its history and background, is it fad or fashion? Please share your thoughts and feelings about this look and do you think its here FOREVER?
